Limited access to music education and professional training continues to hamper the growth of Uganda's entertainment industry as many aspiring artistes and music lovers lack the knowledge needed to build sustainable careers in the entertainment industry.
Speaking during an interview on the Daily Fix Podcast UG hosted by Maas Manus, Kaga Boy said music development should go beyond financial support and include free training in music production, performance, songwriting and the business side of the industry.
"The first thing is knowledge. There are many things to learn about music. There are people who want to join music but don't know how to do it. If you educate them, they will know how to handle themselves," he said.
He argued that limited understanding of music composition, vocal performance and the purpose of music has contributed to the struggles of many upcoming artistes, particularly in the West Nile region.
"If you give them knowlwdge they will know how to handle thmseleves." he added
Kaga Boy also linked the growing number of young people joining the entertainment industry to unemployment and increased social media influence, saying some youths are attracted by celebrity lifestyles without fully understanding the skills and discipline required to succeed in music.
During the discussion, host Maas Manus observed that songs with "less emphasis on morals and creativity often receive greater social attention than those carrying positive messages."
Kaga Boy further urged the government to ensure music development programmes reach emerging artistes, saying existing support largely benefits established musicians with stronger networks and financial resources.
The Matatu hit maker, is among the first beneficiaries of the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) regional revolving fund, said he plans to invest his share in mentoring and supporting young artistes in the Nile Beat League (NBL) to develop their talents into sustainable careers.
He also appealed to the federation to carefully select beneficiaries capable of repaying the revolving funds so that more artistes can benefit from future funding, while encouraging those who have not yet received support to remain patient as additional funding is expected.
