West Nile TV has temporarily suspend broadcasting local music as it seeks to comply with copyright requirements, asking Ugandan artistes to submit their written consent before their songs and music videos can be played on the station.
Sajj MC, the station's head of Music and Entertainment, told this website that artistes and their managers are being asked to submit letters authorizing the station to use their music.
“We have stopped playing local songs. We are now reaching out to artistes to submit their consent allowing us to play their songs,” he said.
The station has reportedly reached out to artistes including Bushy, Maya Keys and Lucky Dee, as well as music managers, like Kartx Manager to obtain the required consent for air plays.
The ChukuChuku host says station is currently relying on music from countries including Kenya, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria, among others while the process continues.
He adds that station's decision follows communication reportedly issued by the Uganda Communications Commission to media houses concerning the broadcasting of copyrighted music without permission.
A similar announcement recently sparked debate among artistes online after the Boss of Westnilexpozed.com, Bdong Brian asks artistes who want their music removed from platforms to reach out to him so that they can be removed. While sections accept, others continue submitting songs for publication and promotion.
The requirement has raised concerns among some local music stakeholders, who say television and radio airplay remains important for promoting Ugandan music.
