For a long time, Alur artistes have struggled to break into the online music market, with many lacking the knowledge or support to legally distribute their work and earn royalties. Those who understood the business were often accused of being "selfish" with the knowledge or being unable to secure the required backing.
Now, the impunity will face its consequences as Apostolic Music Ministry bureau, led by gospel artist Apostolic Francis (AP Francis) a Ugandan gospel superstar based in Paidha, Zombo District, in Westnile has issued a stern warning to digital platform administrators.
"This is a clear infringement of our copyrights, as the legitimate creators and owners of this music are earning nothing from its digital exploitation."
AP Francis, through his legal team, condemned individuals he described as "Promoters and Markers" for uploading and distributing his music without approval, while collecting royalties on his behalf.
"This is not a new issue. We raised this concern eight years ago and were met with dismissiveness. That ends now," the letter reads in part.
The letter demands that unauthorized distributors: "Immediately remove all Apostolic Music Ministry content from their platforms, cease and desist from any further unauthorized distribution or monetization."
The 'Jarimo' singer adds that "Failure to comply with this request will leave us with no alternative but to pursue all available legal remedies, including but not limited to copyright infringement lawsuits and formal takedown notices to platform administrators."
While no ultimatum was provided, the letter cited some platforms and individuals, including ‘Mudundo’ and ‘Mike Jalur Music Promoter,’ among others.
This comes amid recurring complaints by artistes over copyright infringement. Recently, Astro also expressed frustration on social media after individuals allegedly re-uploaded his new video without permission. He wrote, "Someone spends millions on his video and you just wait and take your Channel..."
